The M16 is a staple of the GTA franchise and is traditionally the most powerful rifle you can have in the game. However, in GTA Online with the MKII ammo available through the Bunker research there are more powerful weapons and ammo, but it’s still a good standard weapon, powerful and accurate.
So, where can you get one?
How to get one for free
Rockstar have added a new treasure hunt-style mini-challenge where you can get one for free.
You have to try one of 10 possible locations in an online (Public, reportedly after 20 minutes) session and when you are close a blue dot will appear. This blue dot will then expand to a large blue circle to show a police crime scene and you’ll need to get past the cops and pick up one of five parts to collect.
You’ll then need to keep working your way through the 10 possible crime scene locations until you’ve collected all 5 at which point you’ll collect a bonus and your new M16, a.k.a. Service Carbine.
Unfortunately, you can’t equip it with MKII ammo, but you can add standard parts, such as extending the clip, adding a flashlight and customising your weapon grip and colours.

Or just buy one
Now the exclusivity period is over for the treasure hunt above you can avoid the effort involved in collecting the five weapon parts and just buy one as they are available from Ammunation and your Weapons Workshop for a cost of $370k.
You could probably earn more than $370k in the time it takes to do the crime scene treasure hunt, so it’s a question of whether you want to try something new.
