If you’ve played GTA Online, then you’ll have experienced griefing or modders.
Watch our video above to see it in action and some tips for how to avoid them.
Let’s start by saying that part of the gameplay is taking on other players and it can be great fun for all concerned, but sometimes it gets out of control and your character gets hunted around the map ruining the game.
Or you simply want to mind your own business and do a prep mission, but can’t due to other players following you around. Or worst of all a modder decides to target you and ruin your entire session.
The problem is worst on PC as it’s a lot easier to mod than on a console and indeed in Story Mode it’s mostly tolerated and can let you have a lot of fun as indeed we do on this site. However, it’s different in GTA Online and ruining the game for many players.
So, what can you do about it?
- Use the interaction menu and activate passive mode. This is a good short-term fix and will buy you five minutes of peace, although you can’t enter weaponised vehicles, do missions or battle with othe players while it’s enabled
- Just use the menu to find another session
- Either start the game from Story Mode or leave GTA Online to return to Story Mode and then use the Online menu to start an Invite-only session
- Go to the hairdressers and sit in the chair or likewise go to the cinema or another activity where you can’t be attacked by other players
It’s worth adding that while this will deal with the majority of situations, sometimes modders are determined to ruin your game and will track your character across sessions and there’s nothing you can really do, bar reporting them to Rockstar which arguably will do little and certainly nothing immediate. In this case, the only real options are to go and play Story Mode or have a break and hope that Rockstar will do more to address the situation.
To be fair to Rockstar some mod menus and cheaters have been banned and characters returns to zero, but it’s still a major problem in a hugely popular and fun game that attracts millions of players.
