The upgrade to iOS5 has brought a number of useful features – Newsstand, better notifications, Twitter integration, iMessage service and even a location-based Reminders app.
However, a number of users have reported some side effects with deleted and lost data, unfortunately this site’s main iPhone included. As a consequence, we’ve lost nearly all pictures and all contacts. Ouch.
So, what should you do? Well, we should recommend to play it safe and take your computer and your phone to the Apple Store via an appointment on the offical website and let one of their Geniuses live up to their name.
In the meantime, there are a number of alternatives to try that have worked for some, although by no means all users:
1) Simple, but might just work: Settings > iCloud > Toggle Contacts to off (make sure you click ‘Keep on My iPhone not to lose whatever is left), then back on again and click ‘Merge’.
2) If you’re feeling lucky: Simple and may work if your luck is in: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Import SIM Contacts.
3) Time-consuming but should work: Sync your device, then restore your device from your previous backup.
If you’ve experienced the same problem and even better found a solution other than the above, please let our users know in the comments.

Not cool at all, Apple. I know at least two others this happened to. One the import sim worked and the other never got them back.
