See the video above for a step-by-step walkthrough.
I’ve recently upgraded my gaming PC and was worried that I’d struggle to move my GTA 5 game over. When I was originally looking for how to do this, I saw a bunch of complicated videos involving copying files from one PC to another, but you don’t need to do any of that.
In fact, it’s actually pretty straightforward. You’ll need to have a legitimately purchased game (mine was bought from Rockstar direct, but the same steps should apply if you got it from Amazon etc.) and then follow these steps:
- Download the Rockstar launcher onto your new PC from https://socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher
- Install it on your new PC
- Sign into the Rockstar Social Club with the same account
- The launcher should automatically recognise that you have previously purchased a valid copy of GTA 5
- Within the launcher, click on GTA 5 and then on ‘install’
- Wait (a long time) for 90GB+ to download
- When it’s fully downloaded the ‘install’ button will change to ‘play’ and you are good to go!
- Reminder: you can only play your GTA V game on one PC at a time
As regular readers will know, I often play GTA 5 with mods and your mod files are the only files you need to copy across as obviously they don’t come with the game. Just drag them into the folder with the GTA V .exe file as you did originally and they should all work.
When I originally installed mods I had to install DirectX updates and Windows .net files, but all of these were installed already by a combination of Rockstar and the Windows 10 version I’m using which made the process even simpler. The only issue I had was that my Script V mods were out of date which was resolved by just downloading the latest versions.

Can I just copy the game files from 1st PC to 2nd PC? Then play it on 2nd PC!?
