Which approach vehicle to choose in Cayo Perico Heist GTA Online

Approach vehicle options Cayo Perico Heist

In the video above, I show you all of the different approach vehicles you can use in the Cayo Perico Heist and their pros and cons.

Part of what makes the Cayo Perico Heist is the fact that you can complete it in multiple ways. Stealth or aggressive, solo or with a crew, primary and/or secondary loot, land and/or sea and of course multiple approach vehicles – better still you can change your strategy mid-way through if things start going wrong as they usually do…

So which is the best approach vehicle to use in the heist? Given all the variables, it comes down to your chosen approach and strategy.

Let’s go through the options in the order they appear in the menu.

Kosatka – best for crews and beginners

Many players say this is the best option, particularly when starting out, and it’s also the quickest. The Kosatka allows you to get straight into the compound and in stealth as you can access via the drainage tunnel.

The downside is that if you want to collect secondary loot, you’ll need to do it on the way out when your stealth may have been broken.

However, if you’re attempting the heist in a crew, then you don’t need secondary loot as you can fill up on the gold inside the compound.

Alkonost – flexible and relatively quick

A parachute jump from the Alkonost is a visually spectacular way to start the heist and it has the advantage that you can chose where you want to land for your given strategy which makes it one of the most flexible options.

It’s also a relatively quick way to reach your chosen starting point, but can lead to you getting spotted by the guards if you get your landing spot wrong.

Just remember not to fly over the compound as you get shot down by the air defences!

Velum – ideal if secondary loot at airstrip, but slow

If your chosen secondary loot, including the guard uniform, spawns at the airstrip, then the Velum is a great option. As long as you enable the weapon stash option in the Support Crew menu, then you start the mission in stealth and can also explore a lot of the airstrip without getting detected by the guards.

It’s also ideal if you plan to take out the Control Tower which gives you a whole range of extra options from your Support Crew, including additional weapons, an escape route by plane and the option of an airstrike!

The downside is that you have a long way to go to reach the main compound which makes completing the Elite Challenge (under 15 minutes) harder and increases your chances of being detected, unless of course you pick up the guard uniform.

Stealth Annihilator – quiet, but limited landing spots

The Stealth Annihilator is less flexible than the Alkonost, as you can only chose one of two landing spots. One near the airstrip and the other nearer the compound on the south east of the island.

There are few guards around in these landing spots allowing time to gather your sense and get your crew organised, if you’re not doing the heist solo.

The downside is the lack of flexibility and the time it takes to move to your secondary loot or the compound.

Patrol Boat – flexible and extra weapons for your crew

Although the Patrol boat has two defined starting points near the west and east docks, you can go wherever you want, including leaving it on the shoreline while you pick up secondary loot. This also means you can sail it around to the drainage tunnel avoiding all the guards.

It’s not the quickest boat which can hinder attempts at the Elite Challenge, but does come with a set of guns that your crew can use if you get into trouble.

Longfin – faster boat and flexible

It may not have the weapons of the Patrol Boat (it’s rare you use them in any case), but it’s a faster option. Like the other boat you have the flexibility to go where you want.

It’s also a fun option if you want to start your heist in style by using a suitably angled piece of shoreline to launch your boat up and onto the island!
