If you updated your iPhone’s iOS software to the latest version and your Mail app looks different, then this is how to restore its previous settings.
The changes in later versions of iOS 18 (and possibly other versions) add new Category labels to the top of the Mail app which in turn change the ordering of emails, defaulting to the ‘Primary’ category of emails the Mail app believes are the most important. This can lead to concern that you’re missing emails that YOU believe are important even if there sit within other categories, such as Transactions.
Now you can hold the ‘Primary’ category button and get an ‘All Emails’ view, but if you prefer you can just disable the category view entirely to restore your previous defaults.
To do so, as per the video above, click on the three dots top right and select ‘List view’. This will restore your ‘All Mail’ view and ordering.
In addition, you may want to remove the category icons next to the individual emails as they can take up valuable space better served by previewing the emails themselves.
To do so, you need to open up the Settings app, search for ‘Mail’ and then toggle off the ‘Show Contact Photos’ setting which will remove the icons from your email view.
