Global mobile market share 2013

Global mobile handset sales stats 2013

With the iPhone 5S and 5C just announced, it’s an ideal time to look at the market share within the global mobile handset market.

Stats from IDC covering the first 6 months of 2013 show that the iPhone accounted for 13% of global Smartphone shipments down on the 17% in the same period last year. Even then shipments of iPhones are up 20% in total showing the growth of the market.

Apple will hope to reverse this trend with their new devices and to tap into a new market with the (slightly) cheaper 5C in all its technicolour glory.

In the UK, Apple accounts for 28.2% of Smartphone shipments against Android’s more than double 57.2%, with Blackberry back on 9.3% and Windows Phone even further back on 5.3%.

In the US, the iPhone is much stronger with 42.6% versus 52.9% for Android, with both Blackberry and Windows Phone under 3% at 2.8% and 1.7% respectively.

It’s China though that Apple will be really hoping to succeed in with their new cheaper device. At present they are a mere 8% of the market against a hugely dominant Android at 88.4%, with Windows Phone at just 2% and Blackberry barely registering at 0.1%.

If they can reach their US or even UK levels then this would represent huge growth in what is already a fast growing Smartphone marketplace. However, considerable work is required to achieve this with sales in China and Taiwan combined down 14% in Q2 2013 over the same period last year.
